Celebrate good times, come on.

August 2, 2011

As the band Cool and the Gang so aptly sang, “Celebrate good times” and there is no better place or way to celebrate a special occasion than on safari. I have been lucky enough to have been part of a number of different types of safari celebrations – birthdays, holidays, honeymoons, weddings, anniversaries and graduations – so I thought I’d share a few stories about them to get your creative juices flowing.

My friend, LuAnn took her two teenage boys (Chase and Dane) on safari with me a few summers ago and while we were on safari at Ol Malo we celebrated Chase’s 16th birthday.  The big day started with a bush walk followed by a camel ride to a fabulous bush breakfast, complete with Colin Francombe’s famous bush omelette.  We then spent the rest of the morning tubing the river rapids with Andrew, Chyulu and all the dogs.  What fun!  We continued the celebration with a special coffeecake shaped like a crocodile just for Chase and ended the day with a huge barbecue at Ol Malo House complete with a very competitive game of giant jenga!  Four years later, Chase will tell you it is still one of his most favourite birthday celebrations.

I was lucky enough to celebrate New Year’s Eve with my husband and youngest son at Ol Seki Mara Camp a few years ago.  The team at Ol Seki went all out and surprised us with a bush dinner in Letilet’s cave at the bottom of the escarpment.  You can picture our faces as we were lead down the path in the dark to find a beautifully laid table complete with the requisite party hats and noisemakers. Surrounded by lanterns and the huge starry sky we ushered in the New Year with champagne, delicious food and the sounds of the bush – simply spectacular!

I helped a couple organize their honeymoon to Kenya last year and they had a truly magical safari visiting ol Donyo Lodge, Lewa Wilderness and Mara Plains Camp.  Each of the properties made sure to include a few little touches that made their honeymoon special.  In their own words, this is what they had to say “Overall our honeymoon was amazing.  We thank you for helping us to make it so special.  Your suggestions of the Bush and Beyond properties were excellent.  We loved ol Donyo Lodge, Mara Plains and Lewa Wilderness!  Everyplace made us so welcome: ol Donyo Lodge gave us a beautiful album; Lewa Wilderness organized a beautiful dinner by the pool.  Frankly, we were so pampered everywhere beyond what we hoped.”

These are just a few examples of celebrations that have occurred on safari at the Bush and Beyond properties.  Others include a marriage proposal while out on a walking safari with Walking Wild, a 50th wedding anniversary with the entire family at Lewa House, a wedding celebration complete with a Samburu blessing ceremony at Ol Malo House and many bush Christmases at all of our properties complete with a cactus or acacia Christmas tree.  So no matter what you are celebrating, please think about doing it with us on safari – we promise to make it an event to remember!
